Cats on Cannabis: Can Medical Marijuana Help? March 21 2017

Most Canadians are aware that medical marijuana has been used for centuries to treat everything from chronic pain, to seizures, to insomnia in humans. But did you know that many pet owners have also turned to medicinal marijuana for their cats?

We were amazed to find out the growing number of pet owners looking for alternative treatments such as Canna-Vet & Canna Companion. Although Cannabis use in animals is still controversial, many pet owners swear by it and openly state that it has done wonders for their cats and dogs.

What is Canna Pet & Canna Companion?

Both products are created from unique blend of Cannabis sativa strains, frequently referred to as hemp, designed to enhance the medical benefits of the Cannabis plant while negating the ‘high-inducing’ capacity of THC.

Each capsule contains a combination of phytocannabinoids, the main group of compounds in hemp; terpenes, which help to modulate phytocannabinoids; and flavonoids, which are found in a wide variety of foods we and our pets eat.

All of these ingredients are naturally found in the cannabis hemp plant and complements a holistic approach to your pet’s medication regimen. They do not contain contain common allergens such as corn, wheat, sugar, or soy, or genetically modified ingredients. Developed in a collaboration of scientists, medical researchers, and veterinarians, Canna-Vet & Canna Companion are safe and effective alternatives to standard medications which can produce negative side-effects.

What do people use hemp/CDB for?

Hemp and CBD can help with many conditions, including

> Chronic pain and inflammation caused by arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, and FIC/FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease)

> Helps to reduce cancer-associated symptoms such as nausea and fatigue, while stimulating appetite

> Acts as a neuroprotective agent reducing seizure frequency and intensity

> Supports the immune system

> Reduces bronchial spasms in asthmatics

> Lowers anxiety, phobias and stress-levels

> Aids in decreasing severity of dementia, while promoting healthy aging

> Supports digestive processes and maintains a healthy GI tract

> Encourages a normal, calm demeanour

Are there side effects?

Unlike most prescription medications, there are very few to no side effects associated with Hemp. Hemp's low levels of THC and CBD make make it ideal for supporting your cat, without the risk of them feeling high.

The most common side effect is mild lethargy, which usually subsides in 3-4 days. A less common side effect is softer stools and an increased bowel movement frequency. Since Canna-Vet & Canna Companion use the whole hemp plant, and hemp has a high fibre content, this may cause problems in sensitive cats. A lower dose usually resolves the fibre sensitivity issue. Rarely, vomiting or increased skin itchiness are seen, which would require discontinuing the use of cannabis-based products. Always follow usage directions, and do not administer more than is recommended.

When will it start to work?

Most pets show a response to the supplement within a week, but it can take up to two weeks to see the optimum response to the new supplement routine. Hemp is not a product which produces immediate results. Instead, it encourages your pet’s body to respond in a helpful way. It’s important to give your pet the time they need to adjust to the hemp supplement before determining if you need to increase or decrease their dose. Please consult your veterinarian before making any adjustments to your pet’s medications.

Where can I buy Cannabis products for my cat?
